The Equestrian Bestiary

The land of Equestria is home to many strange and terrifying creatures. This is a personal project put on by RyuRedwings to create art and stories to go along with the many creatures that are seen in the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and also to explore some monsters of original creation.

Call For Artists!

So, it’s become pretty clear to me (RyuRedwings) that I can’t run this project all by myself anymore. Plus, I think it would be fun to include more artists in this. The beasts of Equestria are great, so why not share the fun of redesigning some of them?

To apply to be an artist for the Bestiary, you must be able to:

- work with a set script
- think outside of the box
- be able to create art that can compliment the style already established (note: this does not mean it has to match the current. It just has to look nice next to it!)
- have fun with the creatures that are canon and fanon made

If you’re interested in being an artist for the Bestiary, please send a message to the blog expressing interest, along with a sample entry or examples of your work.

Thanks! I hope to hear from a lot of you!

Sketches for the Bestiary. Some Blanks and that one guy who got two minutes of screentime. King Sombrero, right?

Thank You For Over 100 Followers!!

That’s pretty awesome considering this is a personal project! Thanks so much for being so interested!! You guys are pretty dang awesome!

Remember, if you guys ever want to draw any of the monsters on the monster list, or if you have any suggestions, feel free to to put it in the submit or ask box!

Thanks for sticking around!

Shadow Wretch
Danger Level: High-Extreme
Location: Tartaurus, Everfree Forest, abandoned towns (especially those damaged by fire)
Shadow wretches are living shadows, born deep in the darkest corners of Equestria. They’re extremely dangerous and hostile, and are known to chase a pony down for food. The creatures leave trails of smoke, have a distinct smell of charcoal, and can sink into patches of darkness. They feed off of pony flesh and fear. They’ve been known to hunt in packs sometimes, but are usually seen alone. They are commonly identified with high-pitched and raw shrieks when they’ve sighted prey. If you’re within hearing range, it most likely means the prey is you. They can be chased off with bright light, and fresh water, but aren’t easily deterred.

Thanks Guys! That’s Enough!

I pretty much just wanted to make sure what I thought were Blanks WERE actually the canon Blanks, and not me just making up some crazy thing I think are Blanks.

Anyone Have Any References For Blanks?

They’re the next creature up in the Bestiary (after the next one which will be posted tonight), and I need references since I’ve never actually played “Story of the Blanks.” (I’m too much of a chicken)

Submit them if you have any, please!

Shadowbolt
Danger Level: Medium
Location: Everfree Forest, abandoned towns
Leftovers from a spell cast by Nightmare Moon, the Shadowbolts are a member of the ghost family. They are malevolent in nature, and use offers of fame and fortune to trick ponies into staying nearby so they can feed off their life force. They especially love to challenge pegasi to races, sapping the unwitting pony of their life energy as they fly a race that can never be won. If encountered, the best way to disburse them is with bright light, or by simply running away. They hate being ignored, and doing so to the point of frustration is also a good way to get rid of them as they’ll leave to find somepony else who will pay attention to their offers.

WIP of the Shadowbolts page for the Equestrian Bestiary. I know, it looks finished, but there’s bit more to this page, including a little cameo by a pegasus some people might know.
Hint: She’s in season 3.

Oh man. I love kirins. Those are totally going on the list now!!

…I need to update that thing quick.

Oooh! That’s a good idea! I’ll add it to the list!

Also, a small thought pertaining to questions like this: just because I don’t answer it, doesn’t mean I’m not thinking about it. I usually save suggestions like this in the inbox so I don’t forget them, but I figured I could answer this without forgetting about it.
